About Milos

Milos is your top destination for unforgettable holidays in the Aegean.

Located in the south west Cyclades, it is one of the volcanic islands of Greece, like Santorini. Almost less than 30’ away from Athens by plane or 3 hours by ferry and only 2 hours from Santorini by ferry, it makes for an easily accessible destination for your holidays.

Milos is the island of colours, with a laced coastline of more than 70 beaches, thanks to its extremely interesting geological and mineral wealth, that allow for incredible formations and colours to naturally decorate this heaven on earth. From family-friendly organized sandy beaches, to secluded pebbly beaches and hidden caves, there are many options to cover all preferences and tastes.

The north side of Milos is the more populated part of the island, with big towns such as Adamas, the port, Plaka, the capital and Pollonia, to the north-east, one of the top choices for accommodation and gastronomy. In the north side of the island you will also find the absolute must-sees of the island, such as Sarakiniko, the lunar landscape of Milos, the volcanic cave of Papafragas, the traditional villages of Mandrakia and Klima and the main archaeological sites of Milos, such as the ancient town of Phylacopi, the Catacombs of Milos, the place where Venus de Milo was discovered and the ancient theater, to explore the long history of Milos through the ages and understand its culture and people. In Adamas you will find the Milos Mining Museum, for an incredible journey through the geological history and mineral diversity of Milos, and the Ecclesiastical Museum whereas in Plaka you can find the Archaeological and the Folklore Museum.

Beautiful beaches of the north include Pollonia and Polychronis beach, Pachena, Alogomandra, Mytakas, Fyriplaka and Plathiena.

To the south, the landscape is more volcanic as the inactive volcano of Milos lies above the southern coastline of the island, allowing for yellow and orange hues to take over. Here you will find incredible beaches, such as Paliochori, Provatas, Fyriplaka, Agia Kyriaki, among many, and of course Tsigrado, a beautiful small beach that is quite famous as it is only accessible with a ladder and a rope; don’t worry, you don’t have to bring them yourself, they are already there. Some of those beaches, like Paliochori and Provatas, also have small settlements with some seafront restaurants and a few hotels.
The west and east side of Milos are wondrous, secluded areas that are mostly accessible by 4x4 vehicles or by boat. These virgin and sometimes more industrial landscapes include some of the most famous sites of Milos, such as Kleftiko, the famous landscape of the island, with the pirates caves and the crystal-clear waters and the old Sulphur Mines, the ghost town of Milos with the imposing abandoned facilities of the old mines. A boat tour can easily take you swimming and exploring those incredible sites stress-free, but a more adventurous approach is also available, if you rent a 4x4 vehicle to explore by yourself, with caution. Areas however, such as Kleftiko and, a bit further north, Cave Sykia, are only accessible by land.

A more vibrant nightlife can be found in Adamas, the most romantic sunset in Plaka, the delicious gastronomy of Milos flourishes in Pollonia and, for the adventurous ones, there are hiking trails, scuba diving centers, sea kayak options and many more activities that will unveil the magic of Milos beyond what meets the eye.

We look forward to sharing these and many more tips about Milos with you, when we welcome you to Heliovasilema Studios!
